What is Learfield and/or Learfield IMG College and what do they have to do with US colleges?

Many people come across my blog because they are interested in licensed sports products and perhaps have an idea of a licensed product of their own but don't know where to start to turn their idea into reality. I am a consultant to just that type of person so feel free to contact me, and/or you might be interested in my 12 part series "An Insider's Guide to the World of Licensed Sports Products in 12 Parts: Practical Lessons from the Trenches". Now let's get to the subject at hand...

The US college licensing landscape has changed a lot in the last handful of years, and the top dog by a country mile is Learfield, or more formally Learfield Communications LLC. They primarily do business as Learfield IMG College.

Learfield IMG College logo

I wanted to do a blog posting about Learfield IMG College because if you are involved in licensed sports products and you are either a current US college licensee or are looking to become a collegiate licensee, you should know something about Learfield.

I think of Learfield as having a bunch of different divisions - they are generally related to college athletics, but that isn't always the case, and my guess is that their next five years will see them get into pro sports whenever and wherever they can. But let's stick with the here and now. Learfield has what I would call nine divisions. Here are those nine divisions in Scott Sillcox's order of size/revenues generated for Learfield IMG College (not revenues generated for their clients). For people interested in sports product licensing, the primary division you should be very much aware of is the first division listed below, CLC, and you can pretty much zip past the other divisions described below. But I would also argue that you should understand the relationship between the first two divisions listed below: CLC and Multimedia and Sponsorship Rights. Later in this posting I will explain why I think it's important...

1. CLC
- This is the Licensing Division which manages the product licensing program for 700+ colleges and universities, as well as conferences, Bowl games, championships, etc.
- If you haven't read my overview of the US college landscape, please have a read to fully understand where CLC fits in the big picture of US college licensing.
- CLC is a collegiate licensing agency resulting from the 2018 merger of two industry pioneers, IMG College Licensing and Learfield Licensing Partners.
- CLC is the Licensing division focused on licensing administration, brand protection, trademark infringement, etc.
- CLC has roughly 120 employees.

2. Learfield IMG College Multimedia and Sponsorship Rights

- This division manages the sponsorship rights and multimedia (think advertising sales) for 200-ish collegiate brands including 180-ish schools, a number of conferences and several venues.
- What this looks like for a typical school is a team of somewhere between one and six people who are either located on the school campus or very nearby. This team of people work for Learfield IMG College but in many ways they appear to be employees of the school, which is a good thing.
- If the average school has three Learfield staff, then this division has roughly 550 employees.
- To get an even better understanding of what this division does for each school, and they do different things for different schools, see this list of their 200-ish schools which links to a detailed description of exactly what they do for each school. It also shows you who the actual employees are and how to reach them.
Let's look at two examples at either end of the spectrum:
Ohio State and 12 employees
and
Fordham University and one employee
- This division is the result of a 2018 merger between IMG College (which repped 100-ish schools for multimedia and sponsorship rights) and Learfield (which also repped 100-ish schools for multimedia and sponsorship rights).
- Associated with this division are two small business groupings - one which does National Sales and a "Campus+" Division.

Learfield IMG College also provides a number of other services through various divisions that sometimes operate under different company names (ie no mention of Learfield). These other divisions include:

3. Concession Management
- Levy Restaurants, a joint venture called Learfield Levy
- Current Learfield Levy university partners include Colorado, Iowa State, Missouri, Oregon State, Purdue, Wisconsin and Texas A&M.
- I cannot guess how many people work for tis division, partly because there would be a lot of part time staff due to the nature of concessions and restaurants.

Note: Levy also has ties to pro sports licensing, so expect to see some Learfield action in this space in the next 5 years.
4. Ticket sales
- Learfield IMG College Ticket & Seat Solutions started in March 2019, formerly known as IMG Learfield Ticket Solutions and IMG College Seating.
- Ticket Solutions represents 45 partners nationally and has 170 on-site sales personnel dedicated to their respective relationships. In addition to representing collegiate institutions and conferences, this area also announced its first on-site sales team in professional sports through a multi-year comprehensive relationship with the Indy Eleven (US Soccer league team).

5. Digital and social platform expertise

A. Sidearm Sports
- Software interface allows schools to customize their content streams and digital presence. Sidearm's software and technology powers websites, mobile applications, live stats, social presence and video streaming for its school and conference partners.
- Other services include: Official Websites; Social Media Platforms; Content Creation; Data Aggregation; Engagement Campaigns
- I believe this division has 30-ish employees

B. Mogo Interactive
- Mogo provides online marketing skills to reach fans and ticket purchasers across devices and platforms.
- Mogo was acquired by Learfield IMG College in January 2017 to become another added value for collegiate and brand partners.
- My guess is that this division has 15 employees.

6. Branding
- This division is known as SME
- SME specializes in connecting with audiences through brand identity and advertising development. Founded in 1989, this NYC-based agency has a reputation of creative excellence, thought leadership and client service, and has relationships with sports brands including the Atlanta Braves, Kentucky Derby, Miami Marlins, and the Pac-12 Conference.
- SME’s capabilities include: Brand Assessment; Marketing Research; Strategy; Positioning; Social Media, Web, and Messaging; Consulting.
- I think that if your team/school/project needs a brand refresh, SME can help.
- My guess is this division has 30-ish employees.

- This division is known as ANC.
- ANC, a Learfield company since March 2015, creates video experiences in stadiums, entertainment facilities, transportation hubs and retail venues through the design, integration, operation and content creation for dynamic video display systems.
- Think "video displays and video scoreboards", ie jumbotrons.
- ANC provides: Facilities Consultation; Custom Design; Project Management; Installation; Software and Graphics Creation.

8. Publishing
- This division is known as the Learfield IMG College Publishing Division.
- The Learfield IMG College Publishing Division is a leading publisher of college sports publications, and features a full-time, in-house editorial and graphic design team. It oversees a variety of projects ranging from game day programs and annual yearbooks to posters, schedule cards, magazines and other specialty publications for its university clients.
- More than 1,000 total products are created annually, including all NCAA championship programs, highlighted by the official NCAA Men’s and Women’s Final Fours and the College World Series programs. The Learfield IMG College Publishing Division also produces basketball and football championship programs for many major conferences, including the Big 12, Big Ten, Mountain West and SEC.
- Many of the publications are available for purchase online through the official company’s publications store.
- I do not know how many people work in this division but it must be 20-30 people.

Okay, let's get back to what's important to people in the licensing business about the first two divisions listed above: CLC and Learfield IMG College Multimedia and Sponsorship Rights.

- CLC represents 700-ish schools.
- Learfield IMG College Multimedia and Sponsorship Rights represents 180-ish schools.
- For 160 of these schools (see list below - click to be able to see more clearly), Learfield controls both the Licensing and the Multimedia/Sponsorship Rights.

List of 160 colleges repped by Learfield IMG College and CLC - 1

List of 160 colleges repped by Learfield IMG College and CLC - 2

List of 160 colleges repped by Learfield IMG College and CLC - 3

Point #1: If you are a current licensee of one of these 160 schools, or if you would like to become a licensee of one of these 160 schools, you need to be aware that at some point you might get some economic pressure applied to you. What sort of pressure?

A. If you are a licensee, someone at some point might suggest to you that you should be spending money on multimedia advertising or sponsorship to support the school and your product that is licensed by the school. Maybe it's buying an ad in a program, maybe it's buying time on the video screen in the stadium. It might not be the best expenditure for you and your product, but it's hard to say no if you have a sense that it could affect your license.

B. If you are applying to become a licensee, someone at some point might suggest to you that if you commit to spending some advertising or sponsorship dollars, your path to licensing might become a bit smoother. Maybe it's making a commitment to buy an ad in a program, maybe it's committing to buy time on the video screen in the stadium. It might not be the best expenditure for you and your product, but it's hard to say no if you have a sense that it could affect whether or not you become a licensee.

I am not saying this is going on at present, nor am I saying that this is the way Learfield does business or would condone, but as a business person you should operate with your eyes wide open and be prepared to draw a line in the sand.

Point #2: If you are at one of the 20-ish schools (see list below) where Learfield controls the multimedia and sponsorship rights/sales, you have to expect that the Learfield team will try to leverage the good job they are doing on multimedia and sponsorship sales to them being given due consideration to taking over licensing at some future point in time.

List of CLC's top prospects

A. If you are a licensing director at one of these schools, it's possible that a pitch could be made to someone higher up the decision making chain, perhaps without your knowledge or blessing. Forewarned is forearmed.

B. If you work for Fermata or Exemplar or Affinity Licensing and one of your schools is on this list, or if you are a licensing director for an independent school responsible for your own licensing and like it that way, you can bet that Learfield is going to be breathing down the school's neck to be given a shot at taking over the licensing when the current agreement expires. Forewarned is forearmed.

Point #3: This is a fairly simple point and not controversial. Let's assume you are seeking a college license(s). And let's say you know Learfield does the licensing for a school you are interested in, or at least you think they do. Just be sure that you are looking at the right list - you want to see the list of 700+ schools where CLC does the licensing. Do not go to the Learfield IMG College Multimedia and Sponsorship Rights school list and assume that CLC does the licensing as well - yes for 160 of the 180 schools they actually do the licensing, but for the 20 schools listed below, CLC does NOT do the licensing (or at least not as of March 2020 they don't).

List of CLC's top prospects

Point #4: It seems to me that whenever you concentrate a lot of licensing and multimedia and sponsorship, the opportunity for larger companies, such as Nike or adidas or Fanatics, to begin to exert their influence on the natural order of things. Let's use Nike just as an example. If Nike spends a lot of money on multimedia and sponsorship rights at a lot of Learfield IMG College's schools, you can imagine they will begin to wield a lot of influence. And if at some point Nike quietly says to Learfield, we'd really like to be the exclusive or near-exclusive provider of apparel to this school and that school, they are going to be given an audience. And when CLC makes recommendations to the licensing directors at this school and that school, the possibility exists that their thinking may be influenced by their colleagues and Nike's desires. You get my drift... In some cases, bigger is better, but in other cases, bigger means less competition and that is very seldom a good thing - competition keeps us honest.
Many thanks for learning about Learfield - they're a great company but they have become so big, if you are in the US college licensing field, you are well advised to keep abreast.

Many thanks -
Scott

Give me the NCAA scoop - what are the leading schools and who are the leading licensors and licensees?

Greeting folks!

This note is written by Scott Sillcox in fall 2023 in response to a lot of readers asking me two questions:

A. You wrote and posted many of your blog postings several years ago, is the info still relevant today? Short answer - absolutely! The basics of sports licensing change very little over the years, so I strongly suggest that if you are trying to learn about sports licensing, read away! I have also tried to update certain areas where there have been significant changes, so I feel comfortable in telling you that this information is still highly relevant.

B. You mention that you are a consultant and might be able to help me, do you still do consulting? Short answer - absolutely! I work in the licensing field virtually every day of my life, so if you have questions or would like my help, contact me! The two primary ways I work are hourly telephone consulting ($175US/hour) and face-to-face meetings where I come right to your office for a full day ($1500US/day + $650 travel expenses).

Many thanks and happy reading -
Scott Sillcox

Let's look at "NCAA" licensing a bit more.

This is March 2020 and I'm going to do something here that I have never done before - I initially wrote this blog posting in March of 2012, but enough has changed in NCAA licensing that I have re-written this entire blog posting but I have pasted the original blog below in case someone wanted to see what the scoop was in 2012.  But it's now 2020 so let me explain how things stand currently.

There are about 2500 colleges and universities in the US. Some people are tempted to call this “NCAA Licensing”, but the NCAA has a very specific meaning and doesn’t represent anywhere close to all 2500 schools, so you are best to use the expression “US college licensing”, not “NCAA licensing”.

In the grand scheme of things, there are effectively:
A. Five licensing bodies for US colleges and universities
and
B. One licensing body for the actual NCAA

Let's not lose too much sleep over the companies that are licensed by the NCAA itself - I don't want to sound too controlling but those licensees aren't doing a large volume of NCAA-related sales, ie not many products are sold that feature the circular blue NCAA logo. So let me focus on the schools themselves.

There are 2500-ish colleges and universities in the US. And for those 2500+ schools, there are five licensing "bodies":

1. A company called CLC (which initially stood for Collegiate Licensing Company) which represents 700-ish US colleges and universities as well as numerous Bowl Games, Conferences and other misc entities in the college realm. As you can see in the logo below, CLC is the result of a merger that was finalized in very late 2018 between two companies - Learfield and IMG College - but we aren't going to focus on that. What is important to know is that most (but certainly not all) of the "Top 200" schools in the US are repped by CLC including 100+ of the 130-ish FBS schools.

2. A company called Fermata College which was founded in 2014 and represents a handful of major US colleges and universities. When I say a handful, I mean just that - they represent six schools (it used to be seven, but now six after Virginia left the fold). Their six schools are: The University of Georgia, the University of Kentucky, the University of Miami, the University of Notre Dame, the University of Oregon and the University of Wisconsin. Fermata's founders were former CLC employees.

3. A company called Exemplar Associates, LLC which was founded in 2016 and represents a handful of schools - 9 as of October 2023. Their schools include Boston College and three Ivy league schools (Columbia, Cornell, Penn). Exemplar's founder was a former Learfield employee.

4. A company called Affinity Licensing, best known for being the leading "Greek" licensor (ie fraternities and sororities), now represents 30+ colleges including Appalachian State, Kent State, Georgia State and University of Maine.

5. A company known as Nexus Licensing Group based in Little Falls, NJ represents roughly 30 schools as of Feb 2023. They don't have any FBS (Football Bowl Series) schools but still an impressive number of schools with 30+.

Nexus Licensing Group

6. For the other 1800-ish US college and universities that have chosen not be part of CLC or Fermata or Exemplar or Affinity, the licensing is done directly by the school. Think of these 1800-ish schools as "Independents".

CLC and their 700+ schools clearly represent the lion's share of the market in terms of the highest sales volume schools - I don't know this for a fact but I think it would be safe to say that CLC would have 175 of the Top 200 schools as measured by sales of licensed products and therefore royalties returned to the school (CLC does not represent independents Ohio State, USC or Indiana, but a high percentage of the other biggies).

Elsewhere in my blog (Part 1 of the 12 Part Series) I have talked a fair bit about keeping things in perspective, and I'm going to ask you to play along vis a vis some "NCAA" perspective.

First of all - what is the #1 University in terms of sales of licensed product / royalties generated for the school? Hint: They have been in the top 5 for the last decade or more.

And the answer is: The University of Texas at Austin, aka Texas. If you guessed Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame or Georgia, those would have been great guesses as well.

Next question - what annual royalties did The University of Texas at Austin likely earn in 2019? Got a figure? Don't look below - just take a guess.

If you guessed $76.4 million, you are not correct. Nor are you right with a guess of $52.9 million. $34.3 million? Nope. How about a cool $22 million? Nope. The answer is Texas likely realized somewhere around $15 million in royalties from the sale of its merchandise over the Jan 1, 2019 to Dec 31, 2019 period (I hope you realize I put those other numbers there in case you wanted to guess but inadvertently glanced below for the answer).

My guess is that your guess was higher than $15 million - I'm thinking you might have guessed $30 or $40 or $50 million. But the truth of the matter is just that - the number one school in all of America generated approximately $15,000,000 in annual royalties in 2019. That's a lot money of course, but not an ungodly sum. And that's really my point - keep things in perspective if you can . The number one school in America didn't even generate enough money to cover the $20 million 2019 buyout of former head football coach Tom Herman. Or put another way, Texas' $15 million of royalties was able to nicely cover the nearly $8 million in salaries paid to the assistant football coaches with a bit left over for the new head football coach.

I also find it interesting that the $15 million figure is VERY close to what each NFL team receives as their equal share of the sale of NFL licensed merchandise - in the NFL's case each team likely received approximately $13,000,000 for the 2019 season.

If the Texas figure really surprises you by how low it is, you might want to read this blog where I try to describe in layperson's terms what's going on.

But the point of this blog isn't to put you through a quiz or embarrass you, what I wanted to do is explain the structure of collegiate licensing and prepare you in case you are interested in entering the world of collegiate licensing.

There are two things I'd like to make sure you understand.
1. What I mean when I say "CLC (or Fermata or Exemplar) represents a school"
2. CLC and school rankings

Here goes...

1. When I say "CLC represents a school", I mean that CLC and the school have signed a multi-year agreement that gives CLC permission to represent the school on the licensing front. Let's use LSU as an example (a blue chip example). Instead of LSU having to have an entire licensing staff of 10-15-20 people, CLC handles it on their behalf and LSU just needs a Licensing Director and perhaps an assistant or two. LSU has roughly 500 licensees, and CLC handles all the paperwork, all of the product quality control and the collection of royalties.

Let's assume those 500+ LSU licensees generated annual sales (mostly wholesale sales, but certainly some direct-to-consumer sales as well) of $90,000,000 worth of products. At an average royalty rate of 14%, that means those 500 licensees likely generated roughly $12,000,000 in royalties (vs Texas and their $15 million). CLC collects those royalties on behalf of LSU. CLC would then keep something like 10-15% of the royalties as payment for their services, and the university receives the 85%-90% balance. So LSU would receive a check for $10.5 million from CLC. Almost exactly enough to pay head football coach Ed Orgeron and his full staff of assistant coaches.

Now let's say you are interested in applying to CLC for licenses from 10-15 different schools that they represent. You apply to CLC, not to the school, and you apply online. It's a convoluted application, very much in need of a cleanup, but nonetheless, the point is that you apply to CLC, not to the school. CLC reviews the application, and then they forward it along with a recommendation to approve/not to approve to the school's Licensing Director. The Licensing Director makes the final call, but generally he/she is going to accept CLC's recommendation.

So your real connection to LSU is through CLC and you have very little to do with LSU. You submit your license application to CLC,. You submit your QC requests (ie product approval requests) to CLC. You send your sales and royalties reports to CLC. You send your royalty payments to CLC.

That's what I mean when I say a school is "repped" by CLC (or Fermata or Exemplar or Affinity). If a school is independent, then you deal directly with the school. For larger independent schools (Ohio State, USC, Indiana), they have a full fledged licensing staff of 10-20 people. For smaller schools, the Licensing Director is not only the only person involved with licensing, he/she might have several job titles and only does licensing part of the time.

2. I wanted to share some info about US college "rankings" in case it helps you make business decisions. But I need to explain a few things...

Prior to the above mentioned late 2018 merger between IMG College Licensing and Learfield, IMG College used to be called CLC/The Collegiate Licensing Company and they represented roughly 150 schools (don't believe the figures of 200 or 250 - that's a stretch). And in the 2000's and first half of the 2010's, CLC published wonderful annual and quarterly rankings listing the Top 75 of THEIR schools and the Top 25 hardgoods and softgoods licensees. This was terrific information and CLC is to be commended for publishing those stats. But around 2015, CLC stopped publicly issuing their annual and quarterly rankings. Why? I'm going to guess it had a lot to do with their then-competitor Learfield and not wanting to serve up too much info to a competitor. There were no doubt other reasons but competitor Learfield certainly played a large factor.

My point is that the latest stats I have are from 2015-16, and what you need to keep in mind is the stats only represent the 150-ish schools that CLC represented at the time. The stats do not reflect the current roster of 700+ CLC schools, and they certainly don't factor in the universe of 2500+ US colleges and universities.

So rather than do you a mis-service, here in 2020 I am not going to publish five year old stats that don't really represent the US college marketplace. That being said, if you'd like a spreadsheet showing CLC's school and licensee rankings and info from 2010 to 2016-ish, send me a quick email with the header "I'd like the CLC sales info spreadsheet".

If CLC is reading this blog posting, how about going back to publishing your annual rankings? It would be a great service for many shapes and sizes of people.

If you are trying to determine the "Top 200" schools in terms of sales of licensed product, I'd suggest you start with the 130 FBS Schools and then add to that 30-50 D1 basketball schools that don't have football and then add a few outliers. I'm a consultant and if you really are anxious for this and other rankings-style info, contact me and I can help. I don't have all the answers, but more than the average bear.

And as I have written before, if you want to look up some information on some or all of the leading licensees, please note that we have a terrific, searchable Online Directory of 2500+ North American Licensed Sports Products Companies - it’s called LicensedSports.net and it can be found at that same address and costs just $59 to use for three months. This is a highly searchable directory of licensed sports products companies in North America, companies that have been licensed by various sports leagues (NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, NCAA, MLS, NASCAR, NFLPA, MLBPA, NHLPA and others). There is nothing on the internet that comes close to this resource, and I update the database weekly, sometimes daily. So please take advantage of this resource and "Search Away". If you're not sure if this database would be worth the investment, check out this 3 minute video that gives you a sense of what to expect.

I'm here to help, so if you have any sports product licensing questions, please contact me. And please note that I am a consultant to existing licensees and entrepreneurs wishing to become licensees. I am a good listener and I'd love to help if I can.

Thanks!
Scott

================

As mentioned above, I initially wrote this blog posting in March 2012. A lot has changed in the US college licensing marketplace since that time. So above the dotted line, you will see my new posting that I wrote in March 2020. And below, please find the original blog posting from 2012 with a couple minor updates done in 2015 and 2017.

Here goes..

Let's look at 2012-ish "NCAA" licensing a bit more.
Remember, in the grand scheme of things, there are effectively:
A. Five licensing bodies for NCAA schools/products
and
B. One licensing body for the actual NCAA

Let's not lose too much sleep over the companies which are licensed by the NCAA itself - I don't want to sound heavy handed but those licensees aren't doing a large volume of NCAA-related sales. What I want to do is focus in on the schools themselves. For the schools, the four licensing "bodies" are:

1. A company called Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC) which represents 200-ish US colleges and universities.

2. A company called Licensing Resource Group (LRG) which represents another 200-ish other US colleges and universities.

3. A company called Strategic Marketing Affiliates (SMA) which represents another 200-ish US colleges and universities.

4. A new company called Fermata College which represents a handful of major US colleges and universities.

5. For the other 2000-ish US college and universities that have chosen not be part of CLC or LRG or SMA or Fermata, the licensing is done directly by the school.

Now out of CLC and LRG and SMA and Fermata, CLC clearly has the lion's share of the market in terms of the highest sales volume schools - I don't know this for a fact but I think it would be safe to say that CLC would have 25 of the the Top 30 schools as measured by sales of licensed products and therefore royalties returned to the school (CLC does not represent Ohio State or USC, but represents most of the other biggies).

Elsewhere in my blog (Part 1 of the 12 Part Series) I have talked a fair bit about keeping things in perspective, and I'm going to ask you to play along vis a vis some NCAA perspective.

First of all - which is the #1 University in terms of sales of licensed product / royalties generated for the school? Hint: They have been 1st for the last six years.

And the answer is: The University of Texas at Austin, aka Texas.

Next question - what annual royalties did The University of Texas at Austin earn in the year July 1, 2010 to June 30, 2011? Got a figure? Don't look below - just take a guess.

If you guessed $76.4 million, you are not correct. Nor are you right with a guess of $42.9 million. $24.3 million? Nope. How about a cool $16 million? Nope. The answer is Texas realized slightly more than $10.6 million in royalties from the sale of its merchandise over the July 1, 2010 to June 30, 2011 period (I hope you realize I ut those other numbers there in case you wanted to guess but inadvertantly glanced below for the answer).

My guess is that your guess was higher than $10.6 million - I'm thinking you might have guessed $20 or $30 or $40 million. But the truth of the matter is just that - the number one school in all of America generated a little more than $10,000,000 in annual royalties. That's a lot money of course, but not an ungodly sum. And that's really my point - keep things in perspective if you can . The number one school in America generates barely enough royalty revenue to pay a quality starting MLB pitcher's annual salary, or in NCAA terms, the half of all the licensing royalties earned by UT go to pay the salary of their head football coach. Yikes.

I also find it almost eery that the $10.6 million figure is VERY close to what each NFL team receives as their share of the sale of NFL licensed merchandise - in the NFL's case each team might be receiving approximately $9,000,000 each.

If the Texas figure really surprises you, you might want to read this blog where I try to describe in layperson's terms what's going on.

But the point of this blog isn't to put you through a quiz or embarrass you, what I wanted to do is share some of the CLC rankings in case it helps you make business decisions. Maybe you would like to become a collegiate licensee but it makes sense for you to partner up with an existing licensee - these lists can point out some potential partners. Or maybe you are trying to figure out what schools to pursue vis a vis licensing - in that case the school list might be a big help.

Thus please find three different rankings of CLC schools for the July 1, 2012 - June 30, 2013 period (I updated this in the fall of 2013):
1. A listing of the Top 75 Schools in terms of royalties earned for the school
2. A listing of the Top 25 "Non-apparel" licensees (I might call these Hardlines Licensees). Non-apparel sales account for 30-40% of the total sales.
3. A listing of the Top 25 "Apparel" licensees (I might call these Softgoods Licensees). Apparel sales account for 60-70% of the total sales.

Here also is six years of the same data - not too much changes from one year to the next, but there are larger numbers of changes over a six year period.

Please note: I update this information every year, so if you'd like a spreadsheet showing the latest CLC info compared to previous years, send me a quick email - ssillcox@rogers.com with the header "I'd like the latest CLC sales info spreadsheet".

If you want to look up some information on some or all of the licensees listed above, please note that we have launched a terrific, searchable Online Directory of 1500+ North American Licensed Sports Products Companies - it’s called LicensedSports.net and it can be found at that same address and costs just $59 to use for three months.

Thanks!

List of NCAA Licensees - US College and University Licensees

Short answer - absolutely.

================

If you have been searching the internet for a list of NCAA licensees, you may never find the answer, but this is perhaps as close as you are going to come. Allow me to explain...

When people use the expression “NCAA” in a licensing context, they are usually using verbal shorthand because what they likely were meaning was "US College and Universities" and not the actual "NCAA" itself.

In the grand scheme of things, there are effectively:

A. Five licensing bodies for NCAA schools/products
and
B. One licensing body for the actual NCAA

For the schools, the five licensing bodies are as follows:

Products bearing this logo have been licensed by CLC or SMA
1. A company called Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC) which represents 200-ish US colleges and universities. CLC is based in Atlanta GA and is now owned by the IMG conglomerate. CLC was founded by Bill Battle in 1981 because his old coach at Alabama, Bear Bryant, asked him for business advice related to companies wanting to use his name and likeness as well as the schools name and logo. Visit their website for a list of the schools they represent. Products licensed by CLC use the logo shown above. CLC offers select licensees a license to produce a vintage product line called “The College Vault”.

Products bearing this logo have been licensed by LRG
2. A company called Licensing Resource Group (LRG) which represents another 200-ish other US colleges and universities. LRG is based in Holland MI and was founded in 1991. Visit their website for a list of the schools they represent. Products licensed by LRG use the logo shown above.

Products bearing this logo have been licensed by SMA or CLC
3. A company called Strategic Marketing Affiliates (SMA) which represents another 200-ish US colleges and universities. SMA is based in Indianapolis IN and was founded in 1997. Visit their website for a list of the schools they represent. Products licensed by SMA use the logo shown above.

Products bearing this logo have been licensed by Fermata College
4. A new company called Fermata College, started by several former CLC employees, has begun to make a mark in the collegiate licensing world. As of Jan 2105, they represent 4 schools, but a formible four - Miami, Kentucky, Georgia and Oregon. Fermata is based in Atlanta and was founded in 2011. Visit their website for a list of the schools they represent. Products licensed by Fermata use the logo shown above.

5. For the remaining 2000-ish US college and universities that have chosen not be part of CLC or LRG or SMA or Fermata, the licensing is done directly by the school.

For the NCAA itself, there is actually an official NCAA license – one that allows licensees to use the actual blue circular NCAA logo and the expression “NCAA”. And the licensing body for the NCAA name/logo used to be the NCAA itself, but now the NCAA has contracted with CLC to provide this service, so contact CLC. And if you would like to see a list of companies licensed by the NCAA itself, please see this list published by the NCAA.

In this blog (Part 3 of my 12 Part series), I estimated that if you were to combine all of the US college and university licenses (CLC + LRG + SMA + Fermata + direct with school + NCAA itself), you might find that there were:
Soft goods licensees: 1500 companies
Hard goods: 10,000 companies
Total: 11,500+ companies
Total retail sales: $5 billion
Jan 2015 note: I should have revised this figure some time ago. I believe that collegiate licensing totals between $10 billion and $15 billion retail, not the $5 billion that I and others have been reporting. The explanation is simple - CLC's 200-ish schools represent almost $5 billion of sales themselves, thus what do the other 2000+ school represent? I'd say at least another $5 billion to $10 billion.

So now that you have that background, let's get back to the concept of one large list of "NCAA" licensees.

In early 2012 we launched a brand new, searchable Online Directory of 2500+ North American Licensed Sports Products Companies - it’s called LicensedSports.net and it can be found at that same address and costs just $59 to use for three months. This is a highly searchable directory of licensed sports products companies in North America, companies that have been licensed by various sports leagues (NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, NCAA, MLS, Nascar, NFLPA, MLBPA, NHLPA and others). There is nothing on the internet that comes close to this resource. And I update the database weekly, sometimes daily. So please take advantage of this resource and "Search Away". If you're not sure if this database would be worth the investment, check out this 3 minute video that gives you a sense of what to expect.

Let me point out two especially useful features of the Online Directory:

1. The dynamic view of each company’s website – when you look at a company’s record, there is a live screen with their website right there on your screen.

2. We have tried our best to show one or more key contacts at each company, and wherever possible we have included email addresses, phone #’s, fax #’s and even Linkedin url’s.

This is intended to be a reasonably comprehensive and up-to-date listing of licensed sports products companies, but please understand no list is completely comprehensive or entirely accurate – we strive to do our best and over time this list will become even better. And remember, because this is a live, online directory, it will be constantly changing. I will be adding licensees as I learn about them, and deleting those who exit the licensed sports products business as well. If you have any comments or suggestions (and especially additions!), please email me at: ssillcox@rogers.com

When it comes to NCAA licensees, I estimated that there might be 2500 companies. A large number of these companies would be licensed to produce products for one school, ie a school in their own backyard. What we have tried to do is to EXCLUDE the "single-school-licensees" from our list and instead try to capture those which are licensed to produce products for more than one school. As of March 2012, this list is about 700 companies, and I am sure we are still missing several hundred who are licensed for multiple schools. So please accept this list of NCAA licensees for what it is - a work in progress that is a whole lot better than almost any other list.

I encourage you to visit the actual website/online directory to get up-to-date (and far more detailed) information, but here is a snapshot of the 700+ NCAA licensees in the database as of March 2012.

I have also attached a jpg of the same list showing the City, State/Province and Country of each of these NCAA licensees. But once again, remember that if you go online to the searchable directory, you will get complete information including address and website, as well as contact information including phone, fax, email and in some cases Linkedin info.

At some point you might ask yourself, why would Scott Sillcox spend so much time and effort to create this Online Directory of 2500+ licensed sports product companies in North America?

The answer is simple. I have a fair amount of knowledge about the licensed sports products business, knowledge that seems to be in scarce supply, especially on the internet. After spending 15+ years in the licensed sports products business, I accumulated a wealth of knowledge that I am happy to share. This blog and the Online Directory are designed to share that information and are my way of giving back and helping people interested in the world of licensed sports products.

This blog and Online Directory are also my way of letting people know that I am a licensed sports products consultant. I am available to consult with existing and potential licensees and my goal is simple, to help you make money by being a better licensee and/or save money by avoiding licensing pitfalls. If you would like to learn more, please contact me: ssillcox@rogers.com or by cell 416-315-4736. I am here to help and I am a good listener! And if you are someone interested in becoming a sports product licensee and haven't yet read my 12 Part Blog called "An Insider’s Guide to the World of Licensed Sports Products in 12 Parts: Practical Lessons from the Trenches", I encourage you to read it - you can find it in the blog listing to the right of this posting. The introductory blog can be found here.

But most importantly, check out the searchable Online Directory of North American Licensed Sports Products Companies at LicensedSports.net - it's only $59 to use for three months. And I update the database weekly, sometimes daily.

Thanks and Search Away!
